Rishi Sumra, Regional Head of Internal Audit, Europe

Meet Rishi Sumra, Regional Head of Internal Audit, Europe. Rishi has been with Enstar for over two years and we caught up with him to learn about his career journey and what he enjoys about working at Enstar.

What attracted you to join Enstar?
I was fortunate enough to join Enstar initially on secondment from Grant Thornton, and it didn’t take long for me to realise this was somewhere I could see myself for the long-term. From day one, the people made me feel welcome, and there was a real buzz around the office that stood out. It felt like a place where people enjoyed what they did and cared about doing it well.

What inspired you to pursue a career in Internal Audit?
I started my career on a traditional graduate scheme in External Audit at a Big Four consultant while qualifying as a chartered accountant. Though I was focused on External Audit, it ended up being Internal Audit that resonated with me. I found the opportunity to work across all areas of the business, engage with a wide range of teams, and gain a perspective that few roles offer was incredibly interesting and rewarding.

Tell me about the world of Internal Audit at Enstar.
Internal Audit at Enstar is very progressive. We are advanced in our use of data analytics and AI, and take a forward-thinking approach to how we deliver our work and support the Group. Over the past six months, we have welcomed several new joiners who have brought fresh ideas, new energy, and different ways of thinking into the team.

What does your day‑to‑day look like?
Depending on the time of year, I could be preparing for Audit Committees, overseeing audits, or delivering other large projects. A big part of my role also involves engaging with stakeholders across the business - understanding their concerns, challenges, and priorities, and identifying where Internal Audit can add the most value.

What advice would you give to someone just getting started at Enstar?
Be proactive and curious from day one. There’s a lot to learn at Enstar, including new terminology that may not be immediately familiar, so don’t hesitate to ask questions. People are generally very willing to help, and asking early will accelerate your learning. Say yes to different opportunities as they’re a great way to broaden your experience and build relationships across this ever-evolving business.

In what ways does Enstar support your work life balance?
I live outside of London, so having the flexibility to plan my time in the office effectively and arrange face-to-face meetings when it makes sense is a huge benefit to me. This flexibility is a real differentiator, especially at a time when many organisations are enforcing strict return to office mandates.

What is your favourite part about working for Enstar?
Without question, the people. It’s a highly dedicated group of specialists who are also really approachable and personable.

How do you contribute to Enstar’s culture and values?
I contribute to Enstar’s culture by bringing a strong work ethic, a positive team spirit, and a willingness to get involved beyond day-to-day responsibilities. Over the past year, I’ve joined the Sports & Social Society and helped launch the Enstar UK Golf Club, which has quickly gained momentum. It’s been a great way to strengthen connections across the business while supporting the collaborative, engaging culture Enstar promotes.

And finally… where’s your favourite holiday destination?
The Maldives. I was lucky enough to visit on my honeymoon and would love to go back. The whole trip was picture perfect, with incredible scenery, food, and a lot of drinks. I’d highly recommend.
