Meet Karen O’Sullivan, Head of Data Management based in Portland, Maine. We caught up with Karen to learn about her role in data management at Enstar.
What attracted you to join Enstar?
I came from a larger Insurance company with a sizeable IT function, which posed challenges with having access to the business. Enstar’s smaller size and proximity to key decision makers really appealed to me, and I felt that I was making an immediate impact through my work. Enstar’s Senior Management team is highly supportive and accessible without the layers of organisational red tape typically found in larger companies.
Tell me about the world of the Data team at Enstar.
I lead our Data Management practice within the Data Office, working closely with teams across Data Technology & Architecture, Data Acquisitions, Data Science, and Data Insights. We partner with stakeholders across the business globally to ensure data is managed as a strategic asset. A key focus for us is Data Protection from a technical controls perspective, translating data privacy and governance requirements into practical safeguards across the data lifecycle. This helps reduce risk, strengthen regulatory compliance, and maintain trust in how Enstar manages its data. This is an exciting time for our team as we mature the practice, with many new transformation projects on the horizon.
What advice do you have for someone just getting started at Enstar?
Enstar has a unique business model and is always evolving and growing. Remember, no one person knows everything. You need to identify your areas of expertise and building a strong network around you is instrumental to your success.
In what ways does Enstar support your work/life balance?
Enstar provides a variety of wellbeing benefits, including a wellbeing allowance for each employee. This is one of my favourite benefits as it supports my hobbies of road running and going to the gym.
How does Enstar’s flexible working policy benefit you?
I’ve recently moved from agile to remote working, which has enabled me to move states within the US. Enstar’s flexible work culture enables me to adapt my day around my work commitments, especially when having calls with international colleagues.
What is your favourite part about working for Enstar?
It is a dynamic and ever-evolving landscape which means there are always opportunities to learn, grow and develop. The work is varied and engaging and it’s important to be able to embrace change and adapt. Across the industry, representation continues to evolve. At Enstar, I really value the strong support and mentorship networks we have in place that help colleagues develop and succeed.
